The silver monk ( Cucullia argentea ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the owl butterfly family (Noctuidae).

features

The silver monk reaches a wingspan of around 28 to 34 millimeters. The moths are distinctive. The forewings are narrow and have a greenish basic color. At the root, in the middle and on the edge there are distinctive and typical silver spots that gave the species its name. The silver spots are sometimes lined with black or cut through. The hind wings are whitish, changing to a gray tone on the outside. On the head there is a hood-shaped, forward-facing tuft of hair. The caterpillars are dirty green with red-brown or dark purple markings and dark warts on each segment. The topline is yellow-white and interrupted by red-brown rings. There are rows of yellow and white spots on the sides. The spiracles are bordered in yellow and black. The head is spotted brown and has a forehead triangle framed in white. The caterpillar can easily be confused with that of the mugwort monk ( Cucullia absinthii ), but it is more contrasting. The pupa is yellow-brown with greenish wing sheaths.

Occurrence

The silver monk occurs in Japan , China , through climatically temperate Asia to Europe . In the north it can be found in the south of Finland and Sweden as well as in Denmark , in Germany sporadically, previously also in Thuringia, where the species is now considered to be extinct. Further distribution areas are the western and southern parts of France , northern Italy, Lower Austria and Hungary . The species is mainly found on sandy soils, such as on dry slopes and slopes, grass heaths and field edges.

Way of life

The caterpillars feed almost exclusively on sagebrush ( Artemisia campestris ). They are nocturnal and pupate in the ground in autumn, with the pupae often overhanging for one to two years.

Flight and caterpillar times

The silver monk forms a generation a year that flies from the beginning of June to the beginning of August and is attracted by artificial light sources . The caterpillars can be found from August to September.

Synonyms

  • Cucullia artemisiae , Denis & Schiffermüller. This is not the mugwort monk ( Cucullia artemisiae ) with the same name, which was described by Hufnagel in 1766.

Danger

The silver monk is rare in most of the areas where it occurs in Germany. It is listed in category 2 (endangered) on the Red List of Endangered Species .
