The GDR soccer player of the year was awarded the silver soccer shoe in 1963 for the first time . The editors of the magazine Die neue Fußballwoche carried out a survey to choose the best player of the 1962/63 season , in which a total of 42 GDR sports editors took part by May 25, 1963 and the six best footballers with points (ten points for the favorites, for the other places in descending order seven, five, three, two and one point). In addition to the athletic performance, the "character qualities of the active" should also be decisive. The highest total number of points was achieved by Manfred Kaiser , who was presented with the silver soccer shoe as soccer player of the year on June 22nd, 1963 in the Berlin press club .

The maximum number of points was 420 points. The age given is at the middle of the season on December 31, 1962.
