Silpa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Silpa ( Hebrew זִלְפָּה) is a figure from the Old Testament - the Tanach , which appears exclusively in the Book of Genesis .

She was Lea's maid , who was the first wife of the patriarch Jacob . According to Gen 29.24  EU , Lea's father Laban gave this maid to his daughter for the wedding. After Leah had given birth to four sons, her sister Rachel, who was also married to Jacob, brought her husband Bilhah to her husband , so that she could conceive and bear children in their place. Leah then let her maid Silpa sleep with Jacob. Their two sons Gad and Ascher were therefore considered Lea's children, just as Bilha's children were considered Rachel's children ( Gen. 30.9–13  EU ).
