Twelve tribes of Israel

The 12 tribes of Israel

Ascher (also Asser ; Hebrew אָשֵׁר ʾĀšēr ) is the name of one of the twelve sons of Jacob , the third patriarch of the Israelites in the Tanakh , the Hebrew Bible . Jacob's sons are considered to be the ancestors of the twelve tribes of Israel . Asher is the eighth son of Jacob and the second of Silpah , the maid of his wife Leah ( Gen 35,26  EU ). In other tribal lists, Gad and Asser appear last in the order of the sons ( Gen 35,26  EU ; 1 Chr 1,1ff  EU ). When the tribe of Jacob moves to Egypt, Aser has four sons, a daughter and two grandchildren ( Gen 46.17  EU ). Jacob and Moses promise Asher a fertile land in their blessing.

tribe

The strain Asher obtained after Canaan an area on the Mediterranean Coast, which includes among other Mount Carmel ( Jos 19.23 to 31  EU ). This tribe is possibly identical with the people of the Asar , who were defeated by Sethos I and are mentioned in the Anastasi I papyrus . After the Israelite division of the empire, the tribal area of Asser became part of the northern kingdom of Israel . In Ezekiel's prophecy, Asser is assigned his share of the promised land as the second tribe after Dan ( Ezekiel 28:27  EU ), after having only played a subordinate role in the course of Israel's history.
