Bilhah

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bilhah ( Hebrew בִּלְהָה"Fearfulness"; English Bilhah ) is a woman from the Bible who was one of the maidservants in Laban's household . She had a half-sister named Silpa who was also a maid. At the request of his wife Rachel, Bilha and her master Jacob had two sons: Dan and Naftali .

Laban gave Bilha to his daughter Rachel's maid when Rachel married Jacob. ( Genesis 29.29  EU ) But Rachel had no children. After an argument with her husband, Rachel said, “There is my maid, Bilhah. Go to her! She should give birth on my knees, then I too will have children through her ”( Genesis 30.3  EU ).

In a similar constellation, Silpa Jakob gave birth to Gad ("luck") and Ascher ("lucky child").
