Silverio Franconetti

Silverio Franconetti also known simply as Silverio (* 10. June 1831 in Seville , † thirtieth May 1889 ) was a famous Spanish Flamenco - singer and a key figure in the Golden Age (1869-1910) of flamenco. During this time many musical forms emerged and the performances shifted from private events to professional appearances in the cantantes cafés .

biography

His parents were Nicolás Franconetti from Italy and María de la Concepción Aguilar , born in Alcalá de Guadaira . He spent his childhood in Morón de la Frontera and became a tailor. Allegedly he learned flamenco- style songs from the Andalusian gitanos by listening and was encouraged by El Fillo , one of the first literary flamenco singers, to exchange his profession as a tailor for a career as a singer, first in Seville and later in Madrid . At the age of 25 he moved to Montevideo , Uruguay, where he lived as a soldier and picador . In 1864 he returned to Spain and resumed his singing career. Together with Manuel Ojeda El Burrero , he opened a café cantante in 1871 . Since the business quality was decisive for El Burrero and the artistic quality was decisive for Silverio, they soon separated. Silverio opened his own café cantante, Café de Silverio , in 1881 , in which he performed regularly and to which he invited the most outstanding flamenco artists of his time. His café gave the impetus to the opening of numerous cantantes cafes in Andalusia and the rest of Spain in just a few years.

Silverio was heavily influenced by El Fillo, from whom he learned a lot for his repertoire . According to the assumptions of some authors of traditional flamencology, he adapted these songs to his own style. However, since there are no sound recordings of Silverio, it is difficult to declare any form of flamenco as his creation. The Cabales de Silverio is often assigned to El Fillo. Despite all the debates about possible assignments, he is considered the most famous flamenco singer of his time.

The popularization of flamenco by the cafés cantantes was criticized by the folklorist Demófilo , who wrote the first biography of Silverio in the book Colección de cantes flamencos . According to Demófilo, the popularity of cafés cantantes would sooner or later contradict Silverio's intention to keep the Gitano genre authentic.
