The Silverthorn Collegiate Institute ( SCI , Silverthorn ) is a high school in the West End of Toronto , Ontario , Canada . It is under the supervision of the Toronto District School Board (the successor to the former Etobicoke Board of Education ). The name comes from "The Silverthorn Woods" or "Silverthorn Bush", which represent the border in the south and west. The northern border was known locally as "The Silverthorn Mill Farm".

history

The name Silverthorn comes from the first settlers who settled in New Jersey and Virginia well before the American Revolution . Most of them came from Somerset / Wiltshire in the south west of England and had their last name after the Holy Thorn of Glastonbury . The New Jersey'er branch of the Silverthorns lost their land holdings as they were loyalists and went to Canada, where they were supported by the United Empire Loyalist . Although there is no official coat of arms for this family name, it is a very old unofficial one from ( Bristol / Bath area in Wiltshire, England). Name researchers believe that there are more Silverthorns in and around Toronto and its surrounding cemeteries than in any other region in the world. As Markland Wood developed in the early 1960s, the Etobicoke Board of Education (the forerunner of the TDSB ) decided to build a secondary school for the area. The school was named Silverthorn Collegiate Institute after the family who first settled in the area. The foundation stone was laid in 1963 and in September 1964 the school was opened with 24 teachers and 7 support staff. Murray Young was the first principal. In 1964 the school only had grades 9, 10 and 11. In the next two years, grades 12 and 13 were added. From 1968 to 1969 the school building was doubled in size, plus a lecture hall, library, scientific laboratories and buildings for technical and commercial work areas. A second gym was added later. Silverthorn's school colors are garnet, green and silver and its mascot is Spartacus , the Spartan. The school has the Latin motto Nil Veretur Veritas ("The Truth Fears Nothing").
