Silvio Vella (born February 8, 1967 in Toronto ) is a former football player and, among other things, current coach of the Maltese U-21 national team . Because his family moved from Canada to Malta , he has both Canadian and Maltese citizenship.

Career

society

Until 1985 he played in the youth of Rabat Ajax FC , after which he played 107 games for the first team until 1994. In his first season he was also champion with the team. In the 1993/94 season he was then elected Maltese Footballer of the Year , but his club was relegated in the same season. After that, however, he went on to Hibernians FC in the first division, for which he played until the summer of 2002 and even played 161 games there. In his first and last season he was able to celebrate the championship title here. After that, he ended his career as an active player.

National team

He got his first appearance in the national team on October 18, 1988 in a friendly away game against the team from Israel (2-0). He had his last appearance in a friendly game on June 3, 2000 at home against the national team of England , he was substituted on in the 40th minute; that game ended 1: 2.

Trainer

After the end of his career as a player, he went to the Malta Football Association , for which he coached various teams. From 2002 to 2009 he was employed as an assistant coach for the U-21s, after which he worked as a trainer for the U-19s, which he trained until 2014. From June 2010 to 2013 he was also a coach at his former club Rabat Ajax FC. He has been the coach of the U-21 team since 2014 and also the coach of the U-17 team since 2016.
