Life
Simeon was trained at the academy in Kiev and entered the Basilian monastery Polatsk in 1656 (" Simeonis Piotrowskj Sitnianowicz hieromonachi Polocens. [Is] Ord. [Inis] S. [ancti] Bas. [Ilii] M. [agni] ") . At first he wrote in Polish or in Ruthenian . At that time he mainly wrote so-called "declamations" , which were panegyric songs . In Pskov he met Tsar Alexei I , who was impressed by his literature and called him to Moscow in 1664. Here he worked as a teacher and translator at the convent school.
Simeon left an extensive work of tens of thousands of verses. He mastered all the genres popular in the Baroque era and had a broad knowledge of ancient mythology and literature. According to I. Erëmin, he was “the first to bring poetry as an artistic form to Russia”.
