The Simeulue-Zwergohreule or Simalureule ( Otus umbra ) is an owl from the genus of scops owl .
description
The very small owl reaches a length of 16 to 18 centimeters and a weight of 90 to 100 grams. The plumage is dark red-brown with hinted scribbles on the top and a short, dull yellow to whitish shoulder band. On the red-brown underside there are some white bands and narrow, dark shaft lines. The eyes are yellow, the feather ears are short, the beak is gray. The legs are feathered almost to the base of the gray toes, the claws horn-colored with dark tips.
Way of life
It inhabits coastal forests, clearings and clove plantations. The call is a clear puuk puuk pupuuk that is repeated at short but changing intervals.
distribution
The species lives endemically on the island of Simeuluë off the northwest coast of Sumatra .
