Participants of the British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (1929-1931) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson discovered them in 1930. Mawson named them after Ritchie Gibson Simmers (1905-1984), meteorologist on this research trip .
