Simon Parmet
Simon Parmet (born October 26, 1897 in Helsinki , † July 20, 1969 there ) was a Finnish conductor and composer.
Life
He studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and gained his first experience as a pianist and composer during this time. He later continued his studies in Helsinki and Berlin (1921–1922). He has conducted operas in Kiel , Hagen and Helsinki and has made guest appearances as a conductor throughout Europe, Israel and the USA.
In October 1940 he composed the first setting of the drama Mother Courage and Her Children for Bertolt Brecht . In doing so, he copied Kurt Weill's style under pressure from Brecht . The composition, with which Brecht was very satisfied and which Parmet doubted, is now considered lost.
From June 1941 to 1948 he emigrated to Boston in the USA. He was later awarded an honorary doctorate from the Bogulavsky College of Music in Chicago. From 1948 to 1953 he conducted the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He was one of the founders of the Jewish Song Society in Helsinki and the Akateeminen Laulu Choir, the academic choral society (conductor 1953-1954). In 1954/55 he composed the music for the film The Puppet Dealer (original title Nukkekauppias ja kaunis Lilith ).
"The melody is the language of the heart, the rhythm is the song of the blood and harmony is the mirror of the soul"
