Simone Bianco , actually: Simone di Niccolò Bianco , (verifiable from 1512 to 1553) was an Italian sculptor .

Life

Simone Bianco comes from the province of Arezzo and was born in Loro Ciuffenna . His exact date of birth, further origin and education are unknown. He was first mentioned in Venice in 1512 , where he and the stonemason Martino dal Vedello were commissioned to produce four large marble reliefs with depictions of the Old Testament for the Brotherhood of the Holy Sacrament in Treviso . This job apparently never went through. He must have been very active in the following years, as Marcantonio Michiel mentioned several works by his hand in Venetian collections in 1532. His portrait heads were particularly popular, of which Venetian merchants sent several examples to the French court, and which are presumably identical to the busts preserved today in the Louvre and in the Castle of Compiègne . The name Bianco appears several times in the writings of Pietro Aretino , with whom the sculptor was close friends. On December 20, 1547 he drew up his will. In December 1553 he was still alive.

Through Simone Bianco, the making of portrait busts developed into a separate, recognized art form in Venice that did not exist in this form before. Six signed marble busts from his hand have been preserved, to which modern research has assigned further works. Some of the newly assigned works are made of bronze and are particularly controversial, as no evidence has emerged that the artist worked with this material. None of his works is dated.
