Singapore Expo (2009)

The Singapore Expo (Chinese: 新加坡 新加坡 博览) is the largest convention and exhibition space in Singapore .

geography

The approximately 33  hectare exhibition site is located in the south-east of Singapore in the Tampines district , about two kilometers inland. It has ten halls with over 100,000 square meters of indoor space, a double-track rail connection and a helipad .
The Singapore airport is located two kilometers east. The other locations near the Singapore Expo are the Singapore University of Technology and Design, as well as Changi City Point , UE BizHub East and ITE College East .

history

Since the exhibition area in the World Trade Center was to be demolished, a replacement area of more than 34,000 square meters of hall space was required. Construction of the building began on May 30, 1997, despite the effects of the Asian financial crisis, and was completed two years later with the opening of the building on March 4, 1999. Critics predicted that the halls would be underutilized due to their relatively remote location compared to the old World Trade Center or the Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Center (now known as the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Center ). Buses and taxis were the main modes of transport used by commuters to get to the expo . However, the capacity of these was insufficient at peak loads. This created an urgent need for an MRT station connected to the MRT route to Changi Airport and the city, relieving the burden on both bus and taxi services.

The buildings constructed were financed by PSA International for $ 220 million (excluding the cost of the 40,000 m² extension) and are administered by the Department of Commerce and Industry. The government building, currently managed by Temasek Holdings , Singex Venues Private Limited, was designed by Cox Richardson Rayner.

Railway station and halls 1–6

Until 2003, the demand for ever larger exhibition space caused the Singapore Expo to expand further. This was particularly in response to the needs of IMTA Asia, a military conference held October 17-21, 2005. The total area of 60,000 square meters was already used at the first trade fair. This created further pressure to expand, as there was no major trade fair in Singapore. In response, a new extension of 40,000 square meters with four additional halls was built next to the existing halls. It was completed on September 15, 2005. The expansion includes a multi-purpose event hall and auditorium for meetings, seminars, conferences, congresses, concerts and other special events that are expected to attract high numbers of visitors. This is known as The MAX Pavilion .

Bethesda Community Church has been renting the Singapore EXPO Meeting Rooms for weekly church services since 2001 . Since December 2005, the largest church in Singapore, the City Harvest Church , has been using Hall 8 of the Singapore Expo every week, while the Faith Community Baptist Church has used Hall 10 (The MAX Pavilion). This ended when the Urban Redevelopment Authority issued new regulations for use by religious organizations, which since February 2011 are not allowed to rent more than 1,900 square feet.

With the MAX Atria @ Singapore Expo , which opened on March 22, 2012, a further expansion was made to meet the changing requirements of the participants in trade fairs and exhibitions. The building was designed to be climate-oriented and was one of the first facilities of its kind to offer visitors free WiFi.

traffic

The exhibition center is served by the East West Line and the Downtown Line via the Expo MRT station . The East West Line Station is located on 1 Changi South Avenue, while the Downtown Line Station is located on Expo Drive. From October 2, 2011 to May 2017, Expo Drive was closed for construction work on the Downtown Line station. Traffic was diverted to the newly opened Somapah Road, which opened on September 26, 2011. Buses 20 and 118 have also been running through this station since October 21, 2017.
