The Singer Roadster is a sports car that Singer manufactured from 1939 to 1955 as the successor to the Singer 9 Sports . The roadster was introduced in 1939 as an open version of the Singer Bantam . Production was suspended during the Second World War and was resumed without changes after the end of the Second World War . In 1949 the roadster received a four-speed transmission from the Singer Hunter and was called the Roadster 4A from then on. The models 4AB and 4AC, which came out in 1950, were short-lived and were replaced in 1951 by the Roadster 4AD based on the Singer SM 1500 . The model was produced in this form until 1955. A total of 11,063 copies were made.

Singer 9 Roadster (1948)

The first roadster was actually a two-door, often four-seater touring car and already had a four-cylinder in - line engine with an overhead camshaft and a displacement of 1074 cm³. The engine known from the Bantam model received a new intake and exhaust manifold and a SU downdraft carburetor, which brought the output to 36 bhp (26.5 kW). The old three-speed gearbox limited the car's acceleration and top speed; the latter was around 104 km / h.

The structure was made in a mixed construction, a wooden frame was planked with aluminum sheets. The two rigid axles were attached to longitudinal leaf springs. The car had mechanically operated brakes.

After the Second World War, the chassis was reinforced and the engine moved a little further forward.

Almost all of the production was exported.

Singer 4A Roadster (1949–1950)

In 1949 the switch to the 4A model took place. It received the four-speed gearbox from the Hunter and the SU carburetor was replaced by one from Solex.

Few of this version remained in the UK , although all cars were right-hand drive. 4122 copies were made.

Singer 4AB and 4AC Roadster (1950–1952)

The 4AB model received a new chassis and running gear with independent front suspension on double wishbones with coil springs. The four-cylinder engine was taken over from the predecessor unchanged, but the brakes were now operated partially hydraulically (fully hydraulic brakes on the front wheels and a hydraulic cylinder that pulled the handbrake linkage for the rear wheels).

The 4AC model, which was only produced to a very limited extent, had the somewhat larger engine with a displacement of 1194 cc.

About 1000 of the two models were built together.

Singer SM Roadster 4AD (1951–1955)

The last version of the roadster, the 4AD, was officially called the '' Singer SM Roadster ''. The larger engine of the SM-1500 sedan with 1497 cm³ displacement and an output of 48 bhp (35 kW) was installed there. The chassis and body have been adopted unchanged from the previous model. From 1953, as with the sedan, there was also an optional dual-carburetor engine with 58 bhp (42.6 kW).

Initially all cars of this model were also exported, but from 1953 they were also offered in the UK. 3440 copies were built by 1955.

Singer SMX Roadster (1953)

Of this prototype with a body made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic , probably only 10 copies were built.
