Sing to the Lord

Sing to the Lord (sometimes longer: "Sing to the Lord a new song") is a by the Taizé Community written hymn .

Sing a new song for the LORD.
Praise sing to him all the time,
sing praise to him all the time!

The text has a biblical origin and comes from Psalm 96.1  EU :

"Sing a new song to the Lord, sing to the Lord, all the earth."

Form and spread

The song is a four-part short chant characteristic of the Taizé community. The song is sung over and over again in a meditative way ( ostinato ). It can be supported by solo chants. Solis can be singed in French, English, German, Italian and Spanish. There are a number of notations for instruments: keyboard , guitar , flute , oboe- flute- clarinet , trumpet - trombone , cello and bassoon .

It can be found in the current song booklet under number 24.

In addition to German, the song can be sung in six other languages: English (Sing to God), Polish (Śpiewaj Panu), Czech (Novou píseň), Lithuanian (Viešpačiui giedokite), Hungarian (Jésta ének dicsérje!), Portuguese (A bondade do Senhor).

The song was composed by Jacques Berthier . The textual adaptation comes from "Ateliers et Presses de Taizé", that is, the brothers themselves. The songs from Taizé are under the copyright of "Ateliers et Presses de Taizé".

The song was u. a. published in “Du bist Herr 1” ( ISBN 3-925352-23-6 ) and “Come, breathe” (supplement to the Evangelical Hymnal ).

Singt dem Herr is set to music on five CDs with Taizé songs: Jubilate (February 20, 1992, in German), I trust in you (December 5, 1999, in German), Velaré Contigo (February 17, 2014, instrumental), Sing to God (October 22, 1995, in English) and Liederen uit Taizé (December 14, 1997, in Dutch).
