Sinus Asperitatis is a small, bay-like mare (moon) between the Mare Tranquillitatis and the Mare Nectaris on the Earth's moon . The Latin name means Bay of Roughness and was officially established by the International Astronomical Union in 1976 .
The dark gray basalt surface of the solidified lava sea has an average diameter of 220 kilometers and connects the Mare Tranquillitatis in the north with the Mare Nectaris in the south, at the mean selenographic coordinates 5 ° south and 27 ° east. In the interior of the Marebucht lies the 23-kilometer-wide Torricelli crater , and on its southern edge the 100-kilometer-wide Theophilus crater .
