The sphenoid sinus ( sinus sphenoidalis ) is a small paranasal sinus in mammals that pneumatizes the interior of the sphenoid bone ( os sphenoidale ). In sheep and goats it is not designed for predators , they also often lack. In horses , it is fused with the palatal cavity to form the sphenopalatine sinus . A septum sinuum separates the sphenoid sinus on the right and left sides. In humans, the sphenoid sinus drains into the upper nasal passage.

Diseases of the sphenoid sinuses are rather rare. The sphenoid sinus is most likely to play a role in neurosurgery because it is possible to get through it to the base of the brain , especially the pituitary gland .
