Siphonogorgia is an Indo-Pacific coral genus from the subclass Octocorallia . The coral is found in the tropical western Pacific near the Philippines and Melanesia and in the Red Sea . It grows mainly at the base of reef slopes in strongly flowing water.

features

Siphonogorgia - colonies are similar with its sleek, rich-branched growth of gorgonian , but have no fixed axial skeleton, but are stabilized exclusively by the internal water pressure. Main trunk and large branches are without polyps . As with all Octocorallia, the Siphonogorgia polyps have eight tentacles. The polyps can be completely withdrawn into the branches. The branches are densely covered with spindle-shaped sclerites so that when pulled together they feel rough. Small sclerites sit in the polyps. Siphonogorgia are usually beautifully colored yellow, red or purple. The color of the polyps is often different from that of the branches. Siphonogorgia does not live in symbiosis with zooxanthellae , but lives exclusively by catching plankton .
