Albany is located in the southeastern part of the State of Ohio, a hundred kilometers southeast of the capital Columbus and 250 kilometers south of Lake Erie at 39 ° 14 '  N , 82 ° 12'  W . US Highway 50 runs past Albany , the last remaining transcontinental route that has not been converted into an Interstate Highway and runs for almost 5000 kilometers from Ocean City , Maryland , on the Atlantic east coast across the continent to San Francisco on the Pacific west coast leads. 16 kilometers northeast of Albany is the historic city of Athens and Ohio University, founded in 1804 .

history

The founding of the farming village of Albany in Ohio goes back to the year 1842. At that time Albany was the base of the so-called Underground Railroad , an informal network that gave support to slaves who had fled the southern states . Since some of the former slaves settled in Albany and the population increased, the Lewis Academy was founded in 1847 , a first private school, which was followed a few years later by an all-white private school.

The population of the place has increased by about three percent in the last decade, from 808 inhabitants ( 2000 census ) to 833 inhabitants (2007 update).

The 808 residents of Albany lived in 352 households at the 2000 census, of which 51.4 percent were married couples and 26.7 percent with children under the age of eighteen. 97.3 percent of the population were white , 1.1 percent African American, and 1.5 percent Latinos .

The mean age of the population was forty years, 20.7 percent of the population were under eighteen years old, 8.5 percent 18–24 years, 29.6 percent 25–44 years, 24.8 percent 45–64 years, and 16, 5 percent were 65 years or older.

The author Kendell Foster Crossen (1910–1981) was born in Albany.

Albany's economy is largely based on agriculture. In 2000, the median income was $ 31,534 per household and $ 16,047 per person. 8.3 percent of the families and 13.2 percent of the total population of the place were below the poverty line , including 22.6 percent of the under 18 year olds and 15.0 percent of the over 65 year olds.

Festivals

The annual Ohio Pawfest Festival takes place every September at Lake Snowden near Albany, in honor of North America's largest native fruit, the Papau (English pawpaw ). In addition, the Albany Independent Fair takes place every first week of September at the Albany Equestrian Club, one of the few independent festivals in Ohio.
