Sir Lionel is a character in the Arthurian legend . Lionel is a son of King Bors Gaunnes (or Gaul = Gauls ) and his wife Evaine and the brother of Bors (the younger). He is also a cousin of Lancelot and his younger brother Hector de Maris (also Ector de Maris, not to be confused with Sir Ector , Arthur's foster father ). When her father died fighting the Frankish King Claudas, Nimue , the “mistress of the lake” , took care of her and raised her together with her stepson Lancelot in their underwater kingdom. Lionel later became a Knight of the Round Table, like all male family members .

background

When Lionel travels with Lancelot as a young man, he is captured by a robber baron named Turquine. Turquine whips Lionel with thorn bushes and locks him in the dungeon, while his brother Bors, instead of freeing him, decides to rescue a maiden in need who has been taken in the opposite direction. Bors brings the virgin to safety, fearing Lionel is dead. However, Lionel is able to break free and escape. A similar incident occurs later when Lionel goes on a search for the Holy Grail . He turns out to be unworthy of touching the blessed object because, out of revenge, he attacks his brother who had not saved him. Bors, however, is worthy of the Grail, as he refuses to fight back. Lionel then killed a hermit and Sir Calogrenant when they tried to protect Bors from his brother's anger. Even before Lionel can wound his brother, God intervenes and immobilizes him.

Lionel and the rest of his family later followed Lancelot into exile when its relationship with Guinevere , wife of King Arthur, became known. Lionel also took part in the battle against Arthur's army and became king of Gannes (also Gaunnes). After the Battle of Camlann , Lionel's family returned to Britain to destroy the remaining forces of the fallen Mordred . Lionel was slain by Mordred's son Melehan. His brother Bors avenged his death.
