Sissian ( Armenian Սիսիան ; also transcribed as Sisian ; formerly also Sisavan , Sisawan ; former name Qarakilsə ) is an Armenian city in the province of Sjunik (historically Sangesur ). It is located on both sides of the Vorotan River, six kilometers south of the Yerevan  - Meghri highway . On this it is 217 kilometers from the state capital Yerevan and 115 kilometers from the provincial capital Kapan . The former Turkic name of the city Qarakilsə means Black Church .

In Aghitu , five kilometers south-east in the Vorotan valley, a tomb from the 6th / 7th remained. Century preserved. About ten kilometers away on this route are the ruins of the Vorotnavank monastery and the Vorotnaberd fortress .
