The Situ Gintung ( Sundanese : Gintung Lake ) is a reservoir in the south of Tangerang on the southwestern edge of the Indonesian capital Jakarta .

The reservoir is located on a smaller tributary of the Kali Pesanggrahan River . The 10 m high dam was built in the Dutch colonial era and completed in 1933. A retention lake was created with an area of around 20 hectares at normal water levels and up to 31 hectares at high water.

Originally the lake was used to irrigate rice fields, today, since the surrounding area is used as a residential area and rice is no longer cultivated, primarily to regulate floods . During the monsoon rains , the rivers in the region repeatedly overflow their banks (particularly badly in February 2007, for example, when three quarters of Jakarta's urban area were under water).

Dam break

After several days of heavy rain, the dam broke on March 27, 2009 at 2:00 am local time after cracks had already appeared. The contents of the lake, filled to the brim, spilled through a 15 m wide breach over densely populated area. The up to 4 m high tidal wave devastated the slum- like district of Cirendeu with around 500 houses. Many of the light-wood huts were destroyed, those that withstood the water pressure were placed 2 m high under water and mud. The residents were surprised in their sleep and at least 93 people drowned. On March 28 of that year, around 100 people were still reported missing.
