Seat rail

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Seat rail is the name given to parts of car seats , especially the front seats . They are used for the horizontal longitudinal adjustment of the seat in the motor vehicle .

A seat rail consists of fixed and slidable steel profile parts with latching and locking devices . Seat rails are always used in pairs, with an operating element on one of the parts to release the lock.

Seat rails are attached on both sides to the base of the seat and together with it to the seat console . The seat console is in turn mounted on the floor pan in the motor vehicle . In some cases, the seat rails are connected to the floor assembly without intermediate seat consoles or they are omitted entirely. The latter happens when the seats have built-in horizontal adjustment or no adjustability is provided.

With the adjustment made possible by the seat rails, the primary adjustment of the sitting position on the front seats to different body sizes is achieved. For people with limited mobility , pushing the seat far back on the seat rails to gain space can make it easier to get in. For unusually tall people or for people of short stature, extended seat rails can be installed as part of the motor vehicle adaptation for physically handicapped people .

In the event of significant changes to the seat console and seat rails, the general operating permit (ABE) may expire and a new report from the vehicle registration office must be obtained for approval .
