Skarpsalling Karret

The as Skarpsalling Karret (also Skarpsallingkarret ) became known ceramic vase comes from a 5200 year old passage grave at Skarp Salling in Oudrup Hede, 18 km northwest of Aars in Himmerland in northern part of Jutland ( Denmark ). In terms of its decoration and technical design, the clay vessel is of extremely high quality. It is considered to be the "most beautiful stone age ceramic north of the Alps". Apart from a small damage to the edge, it is intact. The height of the funnel beaker is 19.5 cm.

The shape and decoration belong to the so-called Troldeberg phase at the beginning of the megalithic period of the funnel beaker culture (TBK). The horizontal decoration consists of a circumferential band of vertical patterns and broad areas hatched with lines. The main decorations are wide vertical, unadorned but shiny strips that are perfectly grouped in the surrounding zones. The decoration was made with the edge of a cockle and a bird bone. Two wide horizontal eyelets show that the vessel could be hung.

The clay vessel was found in the summer of 1891 (the same year as the Gundestrup cauldron ) in a 32 hectare area of heath and came to the National Museum in 1892 . The area south and south-east of Løgstør is one of the richest in Denmark in terms of the number of passage graves. Almost all of them were sacrificed to build railways and roads in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

In 1935 the hill was recognized between pine trees. It may originally have been around 25 meters long and three to four meters high. At one end was a five to six meter deep depression that was identified as the remainder of an approximately five meter long passage grave with partially preserved access.

The vessel is used as a motif on the Danish 50 kroon notes that have been in circulation since 2009 .

A similarly perfect find is the eyelet beaker by Flötz in Zerbst , which is assigned to the Altmark group of deep- engraving ceramics.
