description
Construction of the Skipper's Bridge, located around 500 m south of Langholm, began around 1693 and was completed around 1700. The masonry viaduct, made of quarry stone roughly cut into ashlar , leads the A7 ( Edinburgh - Carlisle ) over the Esk . The arch bridge is made with three brick-lined segment arches of different dimensions. While the eastern and central arches are almost identical with widths of 13.6 m and 13.2 m, respectively, the western arch is significantly smaller with a width of 5.6 m. Pointed icebreakers emerge from the pillars on both sides . On the north side they end in simple pilasters . This site was rebuilt in 1809 as part of an expansion to a width of 6.1 m. Brick parapets with natural stone caps limit the roadway.
