In 1988 a foundation was set up in Gouda, whose donation money was to be used exclusively for the acquisition of sculptures in the city. Eleven sculptors were asked to create works that were set up along the four Singels (German: ring walls ): Turfsingel , Kattensingel , Blekerssingel and Fluwelensingel . The first sculpture to be erected on the Sculpture Path was Vanitas by David van de Kop in 1990 and the last to be erected was by Frank Mandersloot in 1996.
