Materials and style

Van de Kop, like his teacher Carel Visser, worked mainly with steel in his early work. The work from this period can mainly be described as constructivist. He himself called these works “framework provisions”.

In the 1970s he broke off his earlier constructivist work and increasingly worked with clay, from which he made large ceramic sculptures in bright colors. The great plasticity of clay gave him the opportunity to shape in a more playful, intuitive and organic way. These works usually consist of several parts that are joined together to form a larger whole after baking.

In later years Van de Kop worked more with roughly processed wood and made his “stacks” from various waste and materials, which he also painted in bright colors. David's studio was a large barn in Dreischor. Here he had contact with nature, the land, the sea, the shells and the sun, all elements that he often used both in his paintings and in his watercolors. During his life, Van de Kop kept a sketch journal in which he recorded everything that impressed him on his daily walks in nature. The constantly changing light, the movement of the waves and clouds inspired him again and again to create new shapes.
