BW

The Skyphos of the Theseus painter was found in 1942 in Frankonisi near Olympia and is located in the Archaeological Museum Olympia under the inventory number P 3230 . It is one of the few almost completely preserved works of the Attic - black-figure vase painting from the area of the sanctuary.

description

The height of the skyphus is 17 cm without a handle , with handles 17.3 cm, the diameter is 22.6 cm, with handles 30.7 cm. The A-side and the left handle have been reassembled from preserved fragments, only a piece was not found on the foot and added. The piece shows false fires in some places , except for abrasion on the handles, the painting has been completely preserved.

On the upper edge of the skyphus there are two rows of dots separated by a thin line, two thick lines of varnish delimit the rows of dots upwards and downwards. The pictures are bordered at the top by a thin line of varnish. On both sides Heracles is shown fighting a bull, to the right of the scene is Athena, dressed in a chiton and cloak and armed with a spear and helmet. Leaf tendrils can be seen in the background. On the A side, Heracles grabs a horn from behind and a leg of the animal, which is standing with its forelegs raised. Athena, who is in front of the bull, moves backwards with an outstretched right hand. On the B-side, the outline of the bull is shown significantly larger than on the A-side; above its tail there are two characters that are reminiscent of letters. Heracles holds him by the head and leg and has brought him to his knees. Athena stands calmly facing the scene and holds her spear vertically in her hand. Heracles' bow and quiver can be found under the handles . There are two broad and three thin lines below the pictures, the base is varnished on the outside, and two circles of varnish are attached to the floor.

Attribution

The skyphos was ascribed to the Theseus painter or his workshop by John D. Beazley ; a more precise assignment is not possible due to the fleeting execution of the folds of the garment and anatomical details. Stamates Fritzilas assigned the vase to the painter of Philadelphia 5481 , a painter from the circle of the Theseus painter.
