Skyy
The band Skyy was founded in 1976 in Brooklyn / New York. Solomon Roberts Jr. was the operator of "Hole in the Ground Studios" (a 4-track tape machine in the basement of his parents' house). The studio was the first port of call for many ambitious young funk bands and musicians in the late 1960s. Regular visitors to the studio were Randy Muller with his band Dynamic Soul (later Brass Construction ), the Crown Heights Affair and BT Express .
In 1976 Roberts formed his first band "Fuel", which he renamed "Skyy" in 1979. The band was signed to the Salsoul record company and produced the self-titled debut album "Skyy". The first release "First Time Around" (1979) was already a big hit in the R&B charts (# 20) and the successful release "Call Me" (1981) even made it into the pop charts (# 26). The band's music was widespread in the clubs of the time and was played by DJs such as Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles .
