Slippage

Under slippage ( Engl. "Slip") is defined as:

  • In genetics, the slipping of the DNA polymerase during replication with the formation of loops in the newly synthesized strand. During DNA repair , however, the strand of the template is then expanded instead of cutting out the loop. This happens especially in the case of sequences that consist of small repeating units ( microsatellite DNA), so that proof-reading activity (i.e. correction) is no longer possible. This can reduce the number of repetitions, but often increase it. The more repetitions there are, the more likely the event is. This is of enormous importance in the development of diseases such as Huntington's disease or fragile X syndrome and a possible cause. If the severity of the disease increases with the number of repetitions, one speaks of anticipation .
  • in stock exchange trading (slippage, shrinkage) the difference between the estimated and the actual costs when buying securities (analogous for sales). Slippage arises u. a. due to a lack of efficiency in order execution by the broker or low volatility .
