The Smardale Gill Site of Special Scientific Interest is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in Cumbria , England . The area is 116.3 hectares and extends along the Scandal Beck , which has cut into the rock in this section.

Its importance lies in the grasslands on the limestone and its wooded parts. The wooded parts of the area are among the most important wooded areas in eastern Cumbria. Over 50 species of breeding birds have been counted here. The grassland, especially in the area of ​​the river banks, is used agriculturally as pastureland. It is unusually rich in grass and herb species. Over 20 species of butterflies have been counted here, which is very unusual for an area as far north as 200 m to 300 m above sea level.
