Smarmore Castle ( Irish Caisleán Smearamair ) is a medieval castle southwest of Ardee in Ireland's County Louth .
history
Smarmore Castle was first mentioned in 1320 as the seat of the Taaffe family , who originally came from Wales .
A Tower House was built around 1320, and further buildings were added in 1730 and 1750. Members of the Taaffe family lived at Smarmore Castle until the 1980s.
After it was sold by the family, the castle was converted into a guest house. In 2015, Castle Craig Hospital , a UK addiction treatment center, bought Smarmore Castle. The Smarmore Castle Private Clinic , a treatment center for alcohol and drug addicts , opened in 2016.
Name origin
The name "Smarmore" is said to have its origin in the Irish legend Táin Bó Cúailnge (English: The cattle robbery of Cooley).
