Smartfilter (filter program)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Smartfilter is a content filter from Secure Computing with which access to Internet pages can be allowed or prevented depending on the settings .

The program was originally developed by Siemens and sold to Secure Computing in 2002. Smartfilter can be used to block access from a device, for example a PC, to certain websites on the Internet. URLs , IP addresses and hosts are grouped into categories in a database and an authorized user can use settings in the database to generally block access to the IP, URL or host addresses grouped in the categories, or only enable them at certain times or generally allow access.

Smartfilter consists of different components. One of them is a plugin that works on an existing proxy , e.g. B. an ISA server , an agent is installed that implements the rule specification referred to in the specialist vocabulary "Policy" locally on the proxy. The other component is the admin server software, which is used to create sets of rules. The admin server then transmits the set of rules to the agents known to it.

Other solutions, such as B. the Cisco PIX use the IFP protocol to send the authorization request directly to the admin server.

The product gained inglorious notoriety because the company Siemens was awarded a prize by the Chaos Computer Club at CeBIT 2001 for making Internet censorship possible .

A related product is the webwasher from the same manufacturer.
