The Smith and Wesson Model 29 is a six-shot double-action revolver in .44 Magnum caliber , produced by the US manufacturer Smith and Wesson . He became known through the Dirty Harry film series with Clint Eastwood .

history

The Model 29 is based on the N-Revolver frame and was initially introduced in 1955 under the designation "Heavy Duty N-Frame .44 Magnum Hand Ejector" until Smith and Wesson introduced the new nomenclature with two-digit numbers in 1957 . The revolver was mainly used by gun enthusiasts, some police units and hunters until Clint Eastwood made the gun famous in 1971 in the film Dirty Harry as "the most powerful handgun in the world". However, this is only true to the extent that the S&W 29 was one of the most powerful handguns in the world at the time. Today, the spectrum of calibers in the Supermagnum class with cartridges or charges such as .480 Ruger, .360 Dan Wesson Magnum, .460 Smith & Wesson Magnum , .500 Smith & Wesson Magnum and .500 Wyoming Express extends far beyond the "classic" the .44 Magnum. In the late 1990s, Smith & Wesson ceased production of many models of revolvers, including the "29er". In 2007, however, the weapon was reintegrated into the Smith & Wesson "Classic Line" program and is now being manufactured again.
