The Smith Knob is a partially snow-covered mountain peaks in the West Antarctic Marie Byrd Land . It rises about 2 km south-southeast of Mendenhall Peak in the eastern section of the Thiel Mountains .
Peter Bermel and Arthur B. Ford , who together led an expedition of the United States Geological Survey from 1960 to 1961 in the Thiel Mountains, named him after the American geologist George Otis Smith (1871-1944), fourth director of the survey from 1907 until 1930.
