The Smuggler's House ( German  house of smugglers ) is a historic residential home from the early 19th century in Swansea , Massachusetts . It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

Description and historical significance

The one and a half story high building was built around 1800 in the typical Federal style of its time from wood. The central entrance is framed by pilasters . In 1938 the house was extensively restored and extended with additions.

There is evidence that the building was used to store goods such as tea that were smuggled into Swansea during the British-American War and is therefore still referred to as the smugglers' house to this day. It is directly connected to the port on the Cole River via Pearse Road .

The house was originally part of a 50  acres (20.2  hectare ) working farm whose land, along with most of the other surrounding lots, was divided into smaller parcels in the early 20th century to create residential areas.
