SMYK Sp. Z oo is a Polish children's store chain with over 100 branches. In 2015 a turnover of 1.6 billion złoty (374 million €) was achieved.

history

The retail chain was founded in 1977 when the first Warsaw department store of the “CDT” (Centralny Dom Torwarowy) group was converted into the “Smyk” children's department store . Until 2000, Smyk was part of the Centrum department stores. After the establishment of the retail chain in Poland with 35 branches at the time, the chain became part of NFI Empik Media & Fashion in 2004 . In 2006 the company began to expand abroad; the first foreign branches were opened in Berlin and Kiev . In 2008 the company operated 49 branches in Poland, seven in Ukraine, three each in Germany and Russia and one in Turkey.

In 2008, Smyk acquired Spiele Max AG from Berlin, which had annual sales of € 76 million. Spiele Max brought 42 branches and 600 employees into the group. At the end of 2009, Smyk changed his strategy for Germany: They wanted to serve the German market with just one brand, and this would be Spiele Max . For this reason, Smyk gave his three stores in Berlin to Spiele Max. In 2013, Smyk opened its 100th store at 25 Chmielna Street in Warsaw. In August 2017, Smyk parted ways with Spiele Max.

Corporate structure

The company has branches in Poland, Russia , Ukraine and Turkey . It sells clothes for children, baby accessories, shoes, books and toys. It carries both well-known brands and its own private labels. In Germany, the company is represented by its subsidiary Spiele Max .

The company was integrated into the EMPiK Media & Fashion Group , which in turn has an annual turnover of around 1.6 billion złoty (€ 450 million) with over 600 shops. This includes 145 Empik stores in Poland and the Ukraine, around 150 franchise stores, including Hugo Boss , Esprit and Maratex , and 80 language schools.

In January 2016, Bridgepoint took over the company for 247 million euros.
