Snæfjallastrond
In Snæfjallaströnd is a stretch of coast in Iceland . Meant is the northwestern coast on the fjord Ísafjarðardjúp, southeast of Jökulfirðir and west of the small bay Kaldalón . The area is hardly inhabited today.
That has to do with the harsh climate. While in the south of the fjord, for example in the village of Ísafjörður , temperatures of 25 ° C can prevail in summer, the snow fields on the opposite side often reach down to the fjord in June, July or August.
This explains the name: German snow mountain coast . In turn, the firn snow fields are remnants of the western extension of the Drangajökull glacier , which covered a much larger area until the end of the 19th century than it does today.
Upstream in the eastern part of the fjord are the islands Æðey and Vigur .
