The island of Vigur is located in the West Fjords of Iceland .

It is the second largest island in Ísafjarðardjúp after Æðey and lies in front of the Hestjörður and Skötufjörður . It has an area of 0.59 km² with an extension of approx. 2.0 km in north-south direction and a width of up to 400 m.

A single farm is on the island. In the Middle Ages it was considered a very rich farm because many sources of secondary income were - and still are - connected to the farm. This applies above all to the care and use of eider ducks , whose down is processed here. The farm has been run by the same family for around 170 years. In 2019 the island was sold to the family of Felicity Aston, who in 2012 became the first person to cross the continent of Antarctica alone without aids. You want to continue operating and expanding the farm. Nowadays, however, a speedboat that drives to the island from Ísafjörður ensures regular communication with the outside world .

Many other birds also nest on the island, notably the arctic tern , puffin and black guillemot .

You can also visit a small windmill (1840) on the island , which was in operation until 1917, which is the only remaining windmill on Iceland and is a listed building. A rowing boat, the eight oars Vigur-Breiður from the beginning of the 19th century, is still used to fetch and bring sheep to and from the mainland.
