Snamenka Castle

Snamenka ( Russian Знаменка ) is a Russian castle on the Gulf of Finland about 20 kilometers outside of Saint Petersburg on the way to Peterhof .

The castle was built in 1754 in the Rococo style on a slope to the sea. The associated estate covered around 12 hectares with numerous storage and farm buildings , greenhouses, a church, garden, park, a village of the same name and another with around 20 courtyards ( Schuwalowka ). After a number of Russian nobles, Snamenka belonged to the Romanovs from the 18th century and was mostly inhabited by them in summer.

The architects AF Kokorinow, Andrej I. Stakenschneider , AW Kwassow and Harald Julius von Bosse were involved in the design of the palace and the outbuildings . From 1852 to 1860, Bosse built a spacious horse stable with angular towers for the servants.

Partially destroyed during the Second World War , the castle was later restored by MM Plotnikow and has been used as a hotel ever since .
