Snorri Hjartarson

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Snorri Hjartarson (born April 22, 1906 in Hvanneyri , † December 27, 1986 in Reykjavík ) was an Icelandic writer .

He studied fine arts first in Copenhagen and from 1931 at the art academy in Oslo . In 1936 he returned to Iceland and from 1939 he was employed in the Reykjavík City Library, which he also directed from 1943 to 1966.

He made his debut as an author with the Norwegian-language novel Høit flyver ravne in 1934, but his breakthrough came with his Icelandic- language poetry collections, of which only four appeared between 1944 and 1979. In contrast to the modernist, so-called " atomic poets ", he remained true to the traditional forms of Icelandic poetry and handled variations of the given meter.

For his last collection of poems, Hauströkkrið yfir mér, he received the Nordic Council's Literature Prize in 1981 .
