The knight Sobbo de Svirte († 1322 ), also Sobbo de Altena, and his descendants significantly influenced the history of the city of Schwerte . Sobbo came from the Isenberg-Altena line and was a loyal vassal of Count Eberhard I von der Mark until 1296 .

After a falling out with Eberhard he became a feudal man of the Archbishop of Cologne Wigbold , led a feud against Count Eberhard I von der Mark from 1299 to 1300 and conquered Limburg Castle near Hohenlimburg .

Finally he gave Limburg back to the Counts of Brandenburg and received swords from them as a fief. At the same time he usurped rights in Hagen and Schwelm from the Archbishop of Cologne. A short time later, in 1300, he signed up as Burgmann zu Strünkede to Count Diedrich VIII of Kleve , which brought Schwerte to Klevian possession.

Sobbo died in 1322, leaving seven sons and two daughters. His son Engelbert Sobbe succeeded in 1324 in acquiring the areas around Schwelm and Hagen on the important Ennepestraße that had been in the hands of the Archbishop of Cologne .

In 1368 the Brandenburg counts regained sovereignty over Schwerte by inheritance . The citizens of Schwerte achieved in 1397 that Count Dietrich I von der Mark granted them city rights. So they freed themselves from the Sobbe family, who resided at Haus Villigst .
