Sobekemsaf was an ancient Egyptian civil servant who lived in the 13th Dynasty (Second Intermediate Period).

background

family

He was the son of the mistress of the house of Duanefret and the great scribe of the vizier Dedusobek Bebi, who in turn was the brother of the high official Nebanch . Sobekemsaf himself was the brother of Queen Nubchaes . Sobekemsaf came from an important family whose members held numerous high positions in the country.

activities

Sobekemsaf was barn master and herald of Thebes , probably not at the same time. Sobekemsaf is best known for a life-size statue that is now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Vienna). The statue depicts an elderly corpulent man and is considered a masterpiece of Egyptian art.

Especially the dating of the work to the 13th dynasty produced some discussion, as the 13th dynasty was viewed in earlier research as a period of decline and one could not imagine that such an outstanding work would date to this time.
