The Translohr Clermont-Ferrand is a Tramway sur pneumatiques , French for tram on rubber wheels , based on the Translohr system . The transport system in the French city of Clermont-Ferrand , known locally ( French Tramway de Clermont-Ferrand ), is operated by the transport company Société mixte des transports en commun de l'agglomération clermontoise , which also operates 19 bus routes with a cumulative line length of 241 Kilometers. Around 262,000 people live in its catchment area.
history
The decision to introduce the Translohr system in Clermont-Ferrand was made in 2000. Before that, an ordinary tram operated in the city from 1890 to 1956 . On December 14, 2001, the construction of the line was contractually regulated. The costs were estimated in advance at around 116 million euros, of which 35 to 40 percent should be used for the vehicles, 30 percent for the route, around 20 percent for the overhead line and the rest for the rail material. The Translohr in Clermont-Ferrand was the world's first installation of this system, the only line A went into operation in three stages as follows:
- October 14, 2006: Champratel - CHU Gabriel Montpied, 9.3 kilometers, 22 stops
- August 27, 2007: CHU Gabriel Montpied - La Pardieu Gare, 4.4 kilometers, nine additional stops
- December 14, 2013: Champratel - Les Vergnes, 1.7 kilometers, three additional stops
A total of 34 stations are served, with the four stops La Chaux, Cézeaux Pellez, Campus and Margeride in the area of the neighboring municipality of Aubière . The depot is located at the Champratel station.
A characteristic feature of the Translohr system is that the vehicles are guided via a centrally arranged guardrail, the wheels are equipped with rubber tires. Thanks to the high coefficient of friction of the rubber tires on concrete, the up to twelve percent incline sections of the route are no problem for these vehicles.
vehicles
In 2005, a total of 20 four-part Translohr vehicles of the type STE4 were procured, and a further six followed later. After one vehicle burned out in 2009, the total number was reduced to 25.
future
From the political side, the future viability of the system is doubted. The construction of a conventional tram line is being considered for a planned line B, which will serve the city's train station, among other things. In this case, line A could be adjusted for major maintenance work after 2030.
