Sociologický ústav ČSAV
The establishment of Sociologický ústav ČSAV (SÚ ČSAV, Sociological Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences) on January 1, 1965 was of enormous importance for the development of sociology in Czechoslovakia in the 1960s , although the institute was only for a short time due to the political situation existed. After the breakup of the Prague Spring , the institute was dissolved in 1970.
history
Miloš Kaláb was appointed director of the new institute (he remained so until the institute was dissolved in 1970), and his deputy was Zdeněk Strmiska . In 1967/1968 the institute employed around 90 people and had five departments:
- general sociological theory (headed by Miroslav Jodl , also Lubomír Brokl )
- sociological methodology (headed by Václav Lamser )
- Sociology of the working groups (headed by Dragoslav Slejška , other members of staff included Rudolf Battěk )
- Sociology of the leisure time (direction Blanka Filipcová , also Blanka Vaváková and others)
- Theory and Sociology of Religions (headed by Erika Kadlecová )
later came the department for comparative sociology.
The majority of the institute's staff took part in the reform movement in 1967/1968 and in the preparation and implementation of the Prague Spring. On August 28, 1968, a meeting of the staff (all members of the CPC) took place, at which the express condemnation of the Warsaw Pact's intervention in Czechoslovakia was passed. The management of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences had to decide to close the institute. This happened at the beginning of 1970 when the institute was merged with other departments of the Academy and the Institute Ústav pro filosofii a sociologii ČSAV (ÚFS ČSAV; Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences) was established. At the same time, almost half of the current staff at the Institute of Sociology had to leave the institute. It was not until 1990 that the sociological department was spun off from the Ústav pro filosofii a sociologii ČSAV and the Sociologický ústav ČSAV was renewed. After Czechoslovakia split into the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic in 1993 , the institute was renamed and the Sociologický ústav AV ČR (SOÚ AV ČR, Sociological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic) was created.
