The Software AG Foundation is an anthroposophical foundation under German law based in Darmstadt , into which the founder of Software AG , Peter Schnell , contributed 98% of the shares in Software AG in 1992 . With around 25 million euros in funding annually, the foundation is one of the largest foundations in Germany.

In mid-2005 the foundation's stake in Software AG's outstanding shares was 31.3%; at the end of 2010 it was 29%. At the end of 2018, the foundation's assets amounted to approx. 1.08 billion euros, with the remaining foundation capital of approx. 138 million euros.

The foundation supports projects in the following areas:

  • Education
  • Child and Youth Services
  • Disability assistance
  • Elderly care

as well as funding in the areas:

  • complementary medicine research
  • biodynamic research
  • Reform pedagogy
  • Nature aid

The foundation supports many projects in the field of anthroposophy - due to Peter Schnell's personal interest in this worldview. Among other things, the Witten-Herdecke University was saved from closure in 2009 with funds from the Foundation .
