Soga no Emishi ( Japanese 蘇 我 蝦 夷 ; * 587 ; † July 11, 645 ) was a member of the Soga clan and a statesman of the Asuka period in early Japan . Other names are Emishi ( 毛 人 ) and Toyora no Ōomi ( 豊 浦 大臣 ). After the death of his father Umako, Emishi took over his office of Ōomi , the state minister.

From the end of the reign of Empress Suiko to the end of the reign of Empress Kōgyoku , Emishi enjoyed influence at court. After the death of Empress Suiki, Emishi succeeded in bringing Prince Tamura to mind as Emperor Jomei , referring to the will of the Empress . Since there was a second candidate with Yamashiro no Ōe no Ō , Emishi murdered the uncle who had nominated Ōe no Ō, paving the way for his favorite. After Jomei retired to the monastery, he supported Empress Kogyoku.

Fujiwara no Kamatari and Prince Naka no Ōe, who later became Emperor Tenji, organized a coup d'état ( Isshi incident ) in 645 , in the course of which they slew the son Soga no Iruka of Soga no Emishi, who had gained too much influence on Empress Kōgyoku . Emishi committed suicide the next day.
