Japan
- July 10 : The Japanese Empress Kōgyoku is deposed in a coup led by Prince Naka no Ōe and Nakanomi no Kamatari , who later founded the Fujiwara dynasty , and her adviser Soga no Iruka is murdered. His father, Soga no Emishi, committed suicide the next day, with which the main branch of the powerful Soga clan died out. Kōgyoku's successor is Kōtoku in the same year . This marked the beginning of the Taika era and the time of the Taika reforms .

- The Byzantine general Manuel conquered Alexandria back after three years of Arab occupation in a coup d'état, but was only able to hold it for one year.
