Jomei
Jomei ( Japanese 舒明 天皇 , Jomei-tennō ; * April 17, 593 ; † November 17, 641 ) was the 34th Tennō of Japan and ruled from 629 to 641.
He was the grandson of Bidatsu -tennō ( 敏達 天皇 ), both on the maternal and on the paternal side, as his parents - Prince Oshisakahikohito-no-Ōe and Princess Nukate-hime - were siblings.
The imperial chronicles state that Jomei, after granting tax exemptions three times, suffered from leaky reed roofs because the income was insufficient for repairs. He had his Imperial Palace in Asuka-kyō in Nara Prefecture , but frequently moved between palaces during his reign:
- 630: (Asuka) Okamoto-no-miya ( 鵤 岡本 宮 )
- 636: Tanaka-no-miya
- 640: Umayasaka-no-miya
- 640: Kudara-no-miya (outside Asuka in today's Kōryō ).
Together with his wife Takara no himemiko , who was a granddaughter of his father Oshisakahikohito-no-Ōe and thus his niece, he had three children:
- Prince Naka-no-Ōe ( 中 大兄 皇子 ), from 661 Tenji -tennō ( 天 智 天皇 )
- Prince Ōama ( 大海 人 皇子 ), from 672 Temmu -tennō ( 天 武天皇 )
- Princess Hashihito , married to Kōtoku -tennō ( 孝 徳 天皇 )
His wife followed him after his death in 641 as Kōgyoku -tennō and his son Naka-no-Ōe was the crown prince.
